FAQ

What is the difference between 190 and 189?
190 requires state nomination (+5 points) and you must live in the nominating state for 2 years after grant; 189 requires no state nomination and you may choose where to live freely.
Which states offer state nomination?
All states and territories offer it: NSW, VIC, QLD, SA, WA, TAS, NT, ACT.
How long does the state nomination application take?
It varies by state, usually 4-12 weeks. Some states have fixed invitation rounds.

Common Refusal Reasons

  • No valid state/territory nomination, or the nomination was withdrawn by the state/not approved
  • The occupation is not on the nominating state's list, or the state's additional requirements (such as a work contract/residence intention/funds) are not met
  • Being unable to substantiate the claimed score after invitation (including points other than the +5 nomination points)
  • The skills assessment was not passed or has expired, or the English score falls short or has expired
  • Health or character requirements not met
  • The genuineness of the documents is in doubt, or the intention to live in the nominating state is not genuine (PIC 4020)
