FAQ

How many points does the 189 visa require?
The minimum is 65 points, but the actual invitation cut-off varies by occupation; popular occupations usually require 80-95 points or more.
How often are the invitation rounds?
There is usually one invitation round per month, with no fixed date.
How long is the skills assessment valid?
Most assessing authorities' results are valid for 3 years, but some may differ.
Which is easier, IELTS or PTE?
It depends on your individual English level. PTE is computer-based and demands more speaking fluency; IELTS writing and speaking are marked by people. It is advisable to try both.

Common Refusal Reasons

  • Inflated EOI score, or being unable to substantiate the claimed score after invitation (age/English/work experience points not accepted)
  • The skills assessment was not passed, or had expired by the time of invitation, or the occupation is not on the relevant list (MLTSSL)
  • Work experience duration, skill level or evidence insufficient to support the claimed points
  • The English score did not reach the claimed level (such as Superior/Proficient) or has expired
  • The applicant's or a family member's health examination falls short, or character (police clearance/genuineness) does not meet requirements
  • Refused for fraudulent or inconsistent documents (PIC 4020 genuineness/integrity provision), possibly with a re-application ban

Can you appeal after a refusal? See the Visa Refusal & Review (ART) Guide.
