FAQ

Can mainland Chinese passport holders apply for 417?
No. Mainland Chinese passports are not on the 417 reciprocal arrangement list, so you should apply for the 462 (Work and Holiday) visa. Hong Kong and Taiwan passports can apply for 417.
What is the difference between 417 and 462?
Both cost AUD 670, allow a 12-month stay, and share the same working holiday purpose. The difference is the eligible passports (different country lists); 462 has English, qualification or cap (capping) limits for some countries, while most 417 countries have no cap and no hard English requirement.
Can it be renewed for a second and third year?
Yes. After completing specified work in a specified industry in a designated area (88 days for the second, 6 months for the third), you can apply for a second and third 417, each granting a further 12-month stay.
Is there a time limit on working for the same employer during a working holiday?
Generally no more than 6 months with the same employer; exceeding this requires prior approval (some industries/regions are exempt). Study is generally limited to 4 months.

Common Refusal Reasons

  • Over the 18-30 age limit (up to 35 for some nationalities)
  • The passport held is not on the 417 reciprocal country list
  • Insufficient proof of funds to cover early arrival costs
  • Insufficient or non-compliant specified work evidence when applying for a second/third visa (days/area/industry do not match)
  • Health or character requirements not met

Can you appeal after a refusal? See the Visa Refusal & Review (ART) Guide.
