Key Information

Validity / Stay / Residence

The stay matches the approved occupational training/professional development program period, up to 2 years; multiple entries are allowed during this time. To extend, apply for a new 407 before expiry.

Eligible Dependants

Eligible family members (spouse/de facto partner, dependent children) can be brought; they can apply together and accompany you.

PR / Permanent Residence Pathway

This visa does not lead directly to PR. 407 is a temporary occupational training visa; after training you usually need to move to another visa (such as employer-sponsored 482/186 or skilled 189/190/491) to move toward permanent residence; the training experience can support the work/skills background for some visas.

FAQ

What is the difference between the 407 and 482 work visas?
407 is a training visa, intended for structured occupational training to improve skills or meet registration requirements, not for long-term employment; 482 is a skilled work visa for filling genuine vacancies. 407 holders must not undertake productive work unrelated to the training.
Can 407 lead to permanent residence?
407 itself is not a pathway to permanent residence, but the skills and experience gained during training, combined with later employer sponsorship, may indirectly help an application for visas such as 482/186, subject to meeting the relevant eligibility.
How do the new March 2026 rules affect applications?
From 2026-03-11, sponsor approval and training nomination approval must both be obtained before lodging the 407 visa application (lodging all three steps together is no longer allowed). This lengthens the overall timeline, so plan ahead.
What is the maximum stay on 407?
Up to 2 years; the exact period is per the nominated training plan duration and the visa grant notice.

Common Refusal Reasons

  • Lacking an approved Temporary Activities Sponsor, or a non-compliant nomination/Deed of Agreement
  • The training plan is not specific or genuine, or cannot be shown to substantially improve the applicant's occupation
  • The applicant's current skills/experience do not match the proposed training (too high or too low)
  • Not taking out and maintaining health insurance covering the entire period (8501)
  • Unable to prove a genuine temporary entry intention (GTE-type considerations), or funds or English fall short

Can you appeal after a refusal? See the Visa Refusal & Review (ART) Guide.
