Eligibility
- Sponsored by an Australian employer
- The occupation is on the relevant skills list
- At least 2 years of relevant work experience
- English meets the requirement (usually IELTS overall 5, each band at least 4.5)
- Meet health and character requirements
Key Information
Validity / Stay / Residence
Up to 4 years (up to 5 years for Hong Kong passport holders); multiple entries. After ceasing work for the sponsoring employer there is a window of up to 180 days (up to 365 days cumulatively over the whole visa) to find another sponsor.
Eligible Dependants
You can bring the spouse/de facto partner and dependent children under 23 as secondary applicants, who get the same work and study rights.
PR / Permanent Residence Pathway
You can move to permanent residence via the Employer Nomination Scheme (186 visa): meet 2 years of full-time work with the approved sponsoring employer (shortened from 3 years in November 2025) under the Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream; or use a CSOL occupation for the points-tested skilled migration 189/190 pathway.

Common Refusal Reasons
- The nominated occupation is not on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), or the occupation does not match the position
- Salary below the Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT)/not meeting the Annual Market Salary Rate (AMSR), or below the TSMIT
- Employer sponsorship is refused, or the genuineness of the position or the Labour Market Testing (LMT) does not pass
- English below the requirement (such as 6.0 in each band), or insufficient skill or work experience evidence
- Health/character requirements not met
