FAQ

Can the 476 visa still be applied for now?
No. 476 permanently closed to new applications on 1 July 2024 (with a cap from 22 December 2023). This is part of Australia's migration strategy shift, which considers the visa no longer aligned with policy priorities. Existing 476 holders are unaffected, with validity to their original expiry date.
I am an engineering graduate; 476 has closed, so what alternative visas are there?
Common alternatives: Australian engineering graduates take the 485 Temporary Graduate visa; overseas or local engineers accrue points for 189 Skilled Independent, 190 state-nominated, or 491 regional skilled (requiring an Engineers Australia skills assessment); employer sponsorship for 482/186 is also possible. It depends on the source of your qualification and your circumstances.
I lodged a 476 before July 2024 but it has not been granted; what happens?
For applications lodged before the closure date but not granted, the Department will email instructions on how to claim a refund of the Visa Application Charge (VAC). Watch for the email guidance and keep the original payment receipt.
What is the difference between 476 and 485?
476 was for overseas engineering graduates from institutions accredited under the Washington Accord (not limited to Australian qualifications, age under 31, IELTS 6.0, stay about 18 months) and is now closed; 485 is for graduates of all fields who completed study in Australia, remains open, and has the Post-Higher Education Work and Post-Vocational Education Work streams. Australian engineering graduates should now prioritise 485.
Can an existing 476 visa be renewed or moved to PR?
476 cannot be renewed and does not lead directly to permanent residence. Plan your next step within the visa's validity, such as obtaining a skills assessment and English score for skilled migration, or securing employer sponsorship. Earlier holders affected by pandemic border closures had additional extension arrangements.

Common Refusal Reasons

  • Closed to new applications: new applications lodged after the cap took effect are invalid (2025-26)
  • The engineering qualification is not from a recognised institution or was not completed within 24 months before application
  • Over 31 at application
  • Having previously held a 476 or 485 visa as the primary applicant (not eligible to reapply)
  • English falls short (holders of passports other than the UK/US/Canada/New Zealand/Ireland must provide a qualifying English score)
  • Not being outside Australia at decision (and not a 444 visa holder), or health/character not met

Can you appeal after a refusal? See the Visa Refusal & Review (ART) Guide.
